Killing of Self

I know a girl who went to Haiti and when she came back she spoke about how we are to die to self. The only problem with this is verse is that it is sometimes translated into a passive sense. She had pointed out that we could stand to think about this verse as an active way of killing of our self (that is, our selfish desire of course).
